After some participants of the 1931 olympiad in Prague were returning home, the local chess club Schaakstudiekring took the opportunity to organise a small international tournament, pitting five established foreign masters against six local players. The tournament took place in Boulaer Park Hotel. On weekdays, games were played from 19:30 until 23:30, in the weekend from 16:00 until 20:00. Laforce was arbiter. The tournament hall was open to everyone. Denhaene, who was president of the Schaakstudiekring, welcomed the masters on Wednesday July 29th. Sapira, Koltanowski, and Baert, who was still a student at this point, held their own against the international players.

After this tournament, a national double round robin tournament between the local players was planned. The local newspapers faithfully print the results — and then they just stop and the tournament is never mentioned again. Was it cancelled? I do not know. As curiosities, I have included what games I found from that tournament here. I am grateful to Mr. Ulrich Tamm, who sent me two games, quoting [3] and [4] as his sources.

Wanted

  • Many games.
  • The crosstable of the national tournament.
