To celebrate the freeing of Belgium, a small tournament was organised by the Ghent chess club. The main section was an international group, although this was pretty much in name only. Soultanbeieff, Van Seters, and Plavchitch had been in Belgium for ages. Ianovchik, from Bessarabia, was not a new name either. Davey, who apparently was flight lieutenant Davey was in the RAF and possibly stationed in Ghent, although I cannot say that for sure at all.
The national group was won by a young Lemaire. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any games in contemporary Belgian newspapers. The only one I have is from Soultanbeieff’s collection of his own games ([2]).
Wanted
- All but one of the games.
- The crosstables from the national group.
