In the Belgian junior championship, Wostyn  and De Bruycker had finished ex aequo first. Why was Wostyn chosen to play in the world junior championship? I have heard rumours that this was because he had better connections in the FBÉ/BSB, but have so far found nothing to substantiate that theory.

Whatever the case, Wostyn had moderate success: he was in the running for the A final for quite a while and finally finished 18th from 26 players. Bielicki won the world championship with two points ahead. I took the crosstables and dates from [2] and the games from [1].
