Makarichev caught up with Pintér in the last round, clenching the second consecutive Soviet victory in the European junior championship. Goormachtigh caused a surprise by qualifying for final A – the first Belgian to do so since Rooze in 1966-67. [1] has all the games and results. Notice that the crosstable above for the A-final is ordered by Sonneborn-Berger scores, but the official tie-break was the score in the preliminary. This means that the official final standings were as follows:

1. Makarichev 2. Pintér 3. Kuligowski 4. Inkiov 5. Mestel 6. Bjarnason 7. Mack 8. Urzică 9. Koopman 10. Goormachtigh

At this point, the FIDÉ had classified some African countries in the European zone. Consequently, they were allowed to send a participant to the European junior championship, whence Bloch’s participation.
