There were, apparently, fourteen applicants for the student olympiad team. Five, Wostyn, Verstraeten, Goetgeluck, Mertens, and Goetgeluck were selected and the others were invited for a qualification tournament. The tempo was 1 hour knock-out per game. I suspect this tournament took place in Brussels, but I’m not sure. In the end, Van Camp qualified after a close fight. He would only end up playing — and losing — three times in the student olympiad.
