NB: Every game appears four instead of two times in the crosstable.
This tournament took place shortly after a classic quadrangular tournament between the same players in the same city. It was sponsored by the newspaper Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad and took place in the offices of that paper. The concept was that every player would team up with every other player once, facing the other two in a consultation game. The boards were set up quite a bit apart to make sure the players could consult without their opponents overhearing. Players were not allowed to move pieces during their consultation. My source mentions the tempo as 40 moves in 5 hours, which doubtlessly means 2:30 per team. The start was at seven in the evening, so the time control was at twelve o’clock. Games that hadn’t been finished by then were adjudicated by Oskam. De Haas was tournament director, van Balen operated the demonstration board. The prizes were 120, 80, 60, and 40 guilders, respectively. This tournament is of some historical interest, since it was, as far as I know, the last tournament for both Colle and Rubinstein.
