This edition of the national interclub competition saw quite a few surprises. The main one being, no doubt, that Anderlecht’s first team, with the Dutch grandmasters Timman, van der Wiel, and Sosonko, was out-edged not just by the Ghent team but also by Anderlecht’s own B team. On the bottom of the table, the Ghent B team was delegated because the classification was based on board points.
This was the last time this competition was played with ten teams. The K Antwerpse SK chess club had been taken out of the competition the year before, but had won its place back in court. In response, the Belgian chess federation decided to have three teams promote from second division instead of two. Together with the eight remaining teams and the K Antwerpse SK, that made twelve for next year.
The round-by-round results, insofar as I have them, can be found here . The individual results below do not include forfeits. They are also incomplete, since I don’t have full individual results. The first title and rating are those from the July 1988 FIDÉ rating list, i.e. the one from the start of the competition. The second one is from January 1989.
