Gromer was in Belgium regarding his book Les Échecs par la Joie! which was to appear with Lancel’s publishing house L’Échiquier. On the occasion, a small match was held which pitted him, the French champion, against the Belgian champion. The first game was played on Saturday in cafe Greenwich, the rooms of the Cercle Colle, starting at 19:00. The second one took place in La Madeleine, the rooms of the Cercle Libre, on Sunday starting at 17:00. Gromer won, and he would continue beating Belgian players in small matches until the spring of 1939.
