The Brussels chess club Mat organised a tournament which it called a Masters tournament, although no official masters, national or international, participated. Nevertheless, there were enough strong players to make it worth reporting on — contrary, perhaps, to the previous edition. The round-by-round results, the final crosstable above, and a bunch of games appeared in Mat’s club magazine [1].
The tournament started end of January and continued until early June, but I don’t know the exact dates. The games were played on Tuesdays, with adjourned games on Fridays. Presumably, the games took place in the rooms of the club at Romestraat 24 in Sint-Gillis. There were 20 000 BEF in prizes. The tournament was reserved for players with a national Elo higher than 1900.
Kerkhof was taken out of the tournament for repeatedly not showing up without warning. Kavadias left in solidarity with Kerkhof. Duhayon also forfeited his last couple of games for no apparent reason, except perhaps that he had no chance to win a prize any more.
