Match for the Belgian championship, Ghent

15-11-1925 > 25-11-1925

Colle, Edgard BEL 1 ½ 1 ½ 1 ½ 1
Koltanowski, George BEL 0 ½ 0 ½ 0 ½ 0

Koltanowski challenged Colle to a match for the Belgian championship. Apparently, Maurice Censer also challenged Colle around the same time, but that match never materialised. I am not sure whether there were official grounds for the ratification of such a challenge, but it is clear that Koltanowski was the only serious opponent for Colle in Belgium.

Until 1925, their record had been more or less level, despite the fact that Colle has earned an international reputation by then which Koltanowski hadn’t. The verdict was extremely harsh for Koltanowski, who lost all his black games and didn’t manage a single win.

The games were supposed to be played in Colle’s home town Ghent. However, Koltanowski asked to delay some games due to illness. The fifth game was played in Bruges, probably for organisational reasons. All games and organisational details come from [1].
